Fun in the sun

Summer is here, it's time for days on the beach, bbq in the sun and picnics in the park, amazinlgy wonderful!
Here are a few tips of how to take care of your body in the heat and how to have a sun-safe summer.

Always drink a lot of water when you spend time in the heat. We sweat a lot more during the summer and need to dehydrate the body regularly. Why not try electrolyte enhanced water? (Read more about that on earlier blogs)

90% of all skin cancers occurs because of too much sun exposure.

The UVA rays are very strong and can do a lot of damage to you skin and body if you get a little too much of the good thing. The UVA rays can damage the collagen and elastin fibers, which support your skin's firmness. Overtime, it causes your skin to loosen, sag, and wrinkle. It also damages the blood vessels in your skin, making them weaker against infections, bacteria, acne, cancer, and other diseases. The damage is accumulative, and it often doesn't show up until many years later.
The UVA rays does give the body vitamin D which we need to be healthy.

UVB rays can cause sunburns and surface damage to the skin, such as sunspots. They are the greatest contributors to skin cancer.

The best way to protect yourself from these harmful rays are stay out of the sun, BUT we all know that's not gonna happen, so use sun block. When I go to the beach I use a brand called IS Clinical which makes a sun block that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. It also helps the skin to stay hydrated and soothes inflamed and burned skin.

But be sun-clever, when it burns and tingles, get out of the sun and remember that putting on more sunblock does not always help.

Be safe and take care of you and others!

Heyy!!

You know, this has always been a controversial topic for me. I read about sunscreens actually being the cause of cancer and not the sun in and of itself, when had in moderation...and also that it is the UVB rays that help the body to make vitamin D which we so desperately need, as it helps to keep us healthy in a lot of areas in our life, but that the UVA rays are the bad ones... also that the best ingredients for sunscreen are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide...and that the other things can actually be aggravating the things in our cells we are trying to protect, eg. avobenzone etc. ... what are your thoughts on this?

Hey Charlene!

How are ya?
Well, there is of course a million different thoughts around this huge topic.

When it comes to the topic if the rays from the sun can cause cancer i say, yes. It has been proven that rays from the sun and also from sun beds can increase the risk of melanoma.

I think about like this. Things that hurt us in life are hurting us for a reason. There is a reason why it hurts when we break a leg, because its not good for us. We get head aces because something is wrong, that we are dehydrated for example.
When we, from the sun, get burned and our skins get red and inflamed we know that it's not good for us. We also know that the sun feels good to be in for a little while, so thats we should do. Listen to our bodies and we can feel when the sun starts to burn, its enough. Being in the shadow makes us tanned too.

That sunscreen should give us cancer might be true, in the same way that toasted bread might give us cancer. And if you are worried about that, maybe put on a white t-shirt next time you go to the beach, its got the same effect as a sunscreen factor 6.

Just be cleaver about your tanning, and why do we really need to tan anyway?
Are you with me?
Listen to your skin! :)

Hope that gives you an answer...

Hey Johannes, thanks so much for responding! Very well said, the body does communicate with us! Well, truth is I live in Jamaica, I tan easily, the sun is always 'around' and try to protect my skin yes, but i don't need to 'tan' i'm already quite...medium tan in complexion...but it's just this big hype you know, that you should apply a shot glass' worth of sunscreen before stepping out into the sun...but nobody is saying anything about getting the right amount of vitamin D that you can only absorb from getting the sun, and not only from supplements.... just my two cents :) talk to u on another post again, i hope u don't mind...i love your blog a lot, cuz i'm into wellness and spirituality.
